Leonard Auerbach, FASTC

Founding member and Fellow of ASTC, S. Leonard Auerbach was honored with the 2026 Distinguished Achievement Award in Architecture by the United States Institute of Technology’s (USITT) Architecture Commission.

The Distinguished Achievement Award (DAA) is presented to individuals who have “established meritorious career records in specific fields of expertise in any area of design or technology in the performing arts or entertainment industry.”  The Architecture Commission last awarded the DAA for its discipline in 2013.  For 2026, the Architecture Commission clarified that all associated disciplines including architects, acoustic consultants, and theatre consultants are eligible for the honor.  These disciplines work together with clients and other designers to construct and renovate performing arts venues.  Auerbach is the first recipient of this award who practices a design discipline other than architecture.

Len stated, “…I am very honored to receive this recognition from USITT.  It was truly unexpected and has made me reflect on a lifetime of work and the many very talented and dedicated people I have been fortunate to collaborate with.”  He was previously honored as a Fellow of USITT in 1985.  He was named an ASTC Fellow in 2014.

Having been involved with USITT since 1967, Len has seen a great deal of change within the organization and the industry.  He reflected on the early days of his consulting career, noting, “…Theatre consulting was not yet a clearly defined profession. Originally many projects relied on vendors or sales representatives to specify theatrical equipment. Our goal was to provide independent professional advice focused on the needs of the client and the audience and not on selling particular products. Over time the field matured significantly, with consultants becoming deeply involved from the earliest programming and planning phases and serving as a bridge between owners, architects, engineers, and production teams.”
